Happy Monday to everyone. Last week, we decided
to remind you of all the great freight we have in the Midwest with some
trivia. Jon Caywood answered our first question almost immediately, so
we’ll give everyone another shot today.
The
first railroad bridge crossing the Mississippi was completed on April
22, 1856. It was reported that the folks in Rock Island, IL and
Davenport, IA cheered … now the people of eastern Iowa could reach New
York City by rail in no more than forty-two hours!
But just two weeks after the bridge opened, there was a major problem. Was it:
a) Faulty construction caused the central span to collapse.
b) The bridge was hit by a steamboat.
c) Agents for the steamboat interests destroyed the central span with dynamite.
Let us know what you think … and check back later to see if you got it right.
