You may have read that the sleep apnea bill was
signed into law by President Obama last week. The law forbids the FMCSA
from using guidance alone to address sleep apnea screening for drivers.
The
law does not require FMCSA to make a sleep apnea screening rule, but it
does require that if the agency takes action, it must do so via the
formal rulemaking process rather than guidance, as the agency had hinted
it would do.

CNN is investing about $15 million to rework its
digital infrastructure, increasing its emphasis on consumers who get
content from mobile phones and tablets.
Jeff
Zucker, president of CNN Worldwide, said the move is aimed at grabbing
new viewers who reach for the nearest screen when breaking news erupts,
not necessarily the one that is part of a TV set.
“The
future of CNN is as much about digital as it is about a television
screen,” Zucker said at a media event. “I fervently believe mobile is a
big part of our future,” he added later.
What do you think? Do you use mobile devices for news more than television?

and inspire you. Zach Hodskins is a high school basketball player who
has been offered a spot as a walk-on at the University of Florida by

Hodskins’ left arm ends at his elbow.
Before

last few years. He hasn't decided yet whether to accept the Florida
offer, but no matter what he decides, this young man has already done
something important. He’s reminded us all of the power of determination.

your color choices!
It’s
nice to read that our Boyd Bros. blue is the most popular color and is
considered calming. Those who choose blue are conservative, loyal,

attractive to folks who are passionate, cheerful, romantic, aggressive,
and enjoy attention!

Time reports that U.S. retail sales rose a solid 1.1% in February, representing the fastest pace in five months. The retail sales report is the government’s first look each month at consumer spending, which drives about 70 percent of economic activity.
Economists were encouraged by the stronger-than-expected gain in retail sales. Some said the increase means the economy may be growing faster in the January-March quarter than they had forecast.

Blinding snow, at
times accompanied by thunder and lightning, bombarded much of the
nation's midsection Thursday, causing whiteout conditions, shutting down
large swaths of interstate highways and forcing schools, businesses and
even state legislatures to close.
Kansas
was the epicenter of the winter storm, with parts of the state buried
under 14 inches of powdery snow, but winter storm warnings stretched
from eastern Colorado through Illinois. Freezing rain and sleet were
forecast for southern Missouri, southern Illinois and Arkansas. St.
Louis received all of the above — a treacherous mix of snow, sleet and
freezing rain.

Truckers and
others fueling in Wyoming should expect to soon pay a bit more at the
fuel pump. But if Sen. Larry Hicks, R-Baggs, had his way, the gas tax
would have been unchanged, with the entire burden borne by truckers via a
30 cent-per-gallon diesel tax.
He
cited damage that trucks do to the state’s roadways, such as Interstate
80. “Heavy truck traffic is driving up the cost to maintain our roads,”
Hicks told lawmakers. Senator Charles Scott, R-Casper, agreed with
Hicks. He said that truck drivers need to pay “their fair share.”
But
Senator John Schiffer, R-Kaycee, pointed out that there is more to the
state’s road system than I-80. “It’s a system, folks. It isn’t I-80
gobbling up everything,” Schiffer said.

Administration, the national average has topped $4.10 a gallon. That’s
an increase of 8.2 cents over last week and 16.1 cents above the same
week last year. It’s also the fourth consecutive week that the national
average has increased.

The Department of
Energy’s Energy Information Administration reports that after small but
steady notches downward in the last several months, the price of diesel
shot up 9.5 cents this week to a national average of $4.022 cents. The
price had slowly been trending down to a near year-over-year plateau,
but after this week’s jump, the price remains nearly 20 cents higher
than the same point in January of last year.

Introducing Bruce Agee …
Six-and-a-half
years ago, when Bruce Agee first became a professional driver, he was
struggling (like so many drivers do) to balance hometime and a good
income. We are so happy that Bruce decided Boyd Bros. offered everything
he needed, including our Lease Purchase Program, which Bruce completed
in July.
"Boyd
understands that they succeed when you do,” he says. “So they do
whatever they can to help you. They make the program easy to complete
and come out ahead. It only took me three years to finish."
The
engaged father of two typically runs up and down the East Coast, making
it easy to get to his home in Richmond, Virginia. Unless he sees a load
he just can’t pass up, he gets home every weekend, and he loves to take
his family to the beach whenever he can. Bruce also likes to spend time
working on cars or computers and playing with his kids.
Since 1956, Boyd Bros. has been partnering with the best drivers in the business. Call us today at 800-543-8923!

Ken Jennings (the 74-time Jeopardy winner) has
written a book about classic parental cliche's: breakfast is the most
important meal of the day; don’t sit so close to the TV; don’t swim
right after you eat … you get the idea.
You
may have heard many of these American “momisms” (such as the myth that
poinsettias are poisonous), but the ones from other cultures are really
interesting, too. Did you know that many Koreans will only use electric
fans if a window is cracked, because leaving a fan on in an enclosed
room, it’s almost universally believed, can be fatal. In Russia, some
believe that if you clip your fingernails while your relatives are
flying somewhere, their plane will crash!

Many of you may have a program called Java on
your computers. Java is both a language and a platform to run websites
and programs, both on the PC and Mac operating systems.
You
may have recently seen some of the extensive news coverage, including
statements from the United States Department of Homeland Security,
regarding a vulnerability in Java that leaves millions of computers open
to malware attacks and can lure online traffic to virus-infected
websites.
We
got this notice from Norton, but there are many good security programs
on the market. Be sure to update yours to include security against the
Java bug (CVE-2013-0422).
It’s
also recommended that you click through and apply Oracle’s recently
released security patch and make sure you are running the most updated
version of Java.
Happy computing!

Here’s an interesting article from SGI’s website
that offers a new perspective - a look at how the typical 4-wheeler
might view sharing the road with large trucks. Here are some interesting
excerpts from the article:
---------------
The
large truck is a special vehicle. Its motor is not much larger than a
large car engine and yet the load it carries can be 50 or more times the
weight of a car. When accelerating up to speed, truck drivers use up to
18 gear changes. Once they get into top gear, they do not appreciate
having to start again. Therefore, avoid forcing a truck driver to slow
down.
Large
trucks will decrease speed when going uphill. You can expect truck
drivers to pick up speed when going down hills to help them get up the
other side.
Plan
your passing accordingly. It takes longer to stop a large truck than a
car, so a truck driver needs a longer following distance to be safe and
in control. Do not cut in front of a large truck immediately after you
have passed it.
Truck
drivers have problems seeing smaller vehicles. Although they have
mirrors that help them to see each side, you may not be visible to the
driver if you follow too closely. (Besides, you can't see anything
yourself.) Realize that in poor weather, exterior mirrors become spotted
with rain and dirt, and the truck driver does not have an interior
mirror. Be sure to make yourself visible. Drive with your headlights on.
The
driver of a large truck or bus has difficulty turning sharp corners,
particularly to the right. If the driver follows the proper procedure,
vehicles facing him on the street he is entering should be prepared for
the large truck or bus to enter their half of the roadway. If the large
truck operator is not following the proper procedure, vehicles on his
right in the street he is leaving should stay well back to avoid being
crushed between the large truck and the curb. When you see a large truck
or bus making a sharp right turn, give it the room it needs.
All
drivers should avoid a large truck's "no-zone." The no-zone refers to
the blind spot areas around big trucks, where crashes are most likely to
occur. Just like cars, large trucks have blind spots on both sides, but
a large truck's are considerably bigger. These blind spots can mean
trouble if a trucker decides to change lanes and a car is in the blind
spot. In addition to the blind spots on the sides of a large truck,
drivers should be careful around the front end of large trucks.
Truckers
sit up high and the hood of the cab obscures part of the road ahead.
This is why when drivers in a car are passing a large truck, they should
make sure they can see the entire truck cab in their rear-view mirror
before pulling in front. If a car cuts in too soon, truck drivers are
forced to react with little time or room to spare. Large trucks also
have deep rear blind spots. A good rule of thumb is that if you can't
see the large truck's mirrors, the truck driver can't see you.
