Starting
August 1st, weekend motorists on Route 1 in Delaware will be paying
more money at the toll booth. Although the current charges for motorists vary
depending on class and size, all tolls will increase by $1.
State
officials decided to increase toll costs in an effort to help fund road
projects after Gov. Jack Markell’s proposal of a 10-cent gasoline tax was
rejected. The money coming from toll increases will be supplemented with a $20
million loan for transportation projects.

Starting today, bridge work on I-20
over the Mississippi River in Vicksburg will reduce motorists to only one lane
each way for the next six weeks. The project, which is scheduled to run until
August 21st, will block off the east and westbound lanes. The
Louisiana DOT and Development are working together with Missouri contractors to
fix bearings on the bridge that are being stressed by movement on the riverbed.
According to Susan Stafford, a
spokesperson for the Louisiana agency, officials “aren’t sure” how much traffic
and delays the work will cause.

Across the nation, accidents and fatalities on the road have been drastically reduced since increased seatbelt use and a reduction in impaired driving. But authorities in Louisiana say that little progress has been made in reducing speeding, which is a factor in almost one-third of all highway fatalities.
Lt. Col. John LeBlanc, executive director of the Louisiana Safety Commission, says that “aggressive driving” (a category that speeding falls under) is a factor in more than half of all crashes that ended in death in Louisiana.

The San
Antonio Spurs put an end the Miami Heat’s hopes for
a three-peat last night at the NBA Championship, and it wasn’t even close, with the Spurs ending the game at
104-87. San Antonio won its last title seven years ago, in 2007, and almost
tasted victory last year, when the Miami heat “practically snatched the rings
right off their fingers.”
“I say it’s
the sweetest one,” Parker said, “because it’s just unbelievable to win seven
years ago, and to be so close last year, it was very cruel. But that’s the
beauty of sport. Sometimes it’s tough. And sometimes it can be beautiful like
today.”

This summer, the Minnesota DOT will begin to look at the
speed limits on the state’s roads and come to a decision on which ones they
would like to bump up to 60 mph. Since 2011, raising speed limits on roadways
has “become a national trend”’ said Director of Communications for the
Governor’s Highway Safety Association, Kara Macek. “People just like to drive
fast — sort of a bellwether indication of our frantic lifestyle and our need to
get places quickly.”
The decision process won’t be finished until 2019, but it’s
reported that speeds will increase as decisions are made.

Forgive us for bragging a little, but we are VERY proud
of our Boyd Bros. drivers, especially when we get a note like this one from
Breanna Marshall, one of our customer service reps.
Breanna wrote to tell us about a compliment from a
Canadian customer who said that “the folks in his Shipping Department have made
multiple comments about how professional our drivers are and that they are a
pleasure to work with.”
Breanna went on to note that Boyd Bros. has become one of
this customer’s number one carriers, and she added that, “This wouldn’t be
possible if it weren’t for our drivers.”
Amen to that, Breanna! We love our Boyd Bros. drivers.
They make us proud every day!

The 72-hour Roadcheck commercial vehicle safety
event is slated for June 3rd – 5th this year. During the Roadcheck
program, approximately 14 trucks and buses are inspected every minute of
the day somewhere in the U.S. and Canada.
Florida
Highway Patrol Captain Derek Barrs says that a motor carrier is three
times more likely than usual to see one of its trucks/drivers inspected
in the U.S. and Canada during these three days, with states typically
increasing manpower at their fixed pit locations and weigh stations for
the program.

A BIG tip of the cap to Boyd Bros. driver Nathaniel Shealey. We received this note today about Nathaniel’s driving:
Hello,
I'm just writing to tell you about a great driver. Today it was
raining. There was a wreck on 565 involving at least 4 cars. It was dark
(5:45 am). This driver was great. I followed him most of the way to
Huntsville. I doubt there are many better than this guy. Just wanted to
let you know about a wide-awake, careful driver.
Does
it get any better than that? It just goes to show that you never know
who you’re going to help, simply by being a pro and taking your job
seriously.
Mary
Lynn, we thank you for your kind note. Nathaniel, on behalf of
everybody at Boyd Bros., we want to say THANK YOU for representing our
company in such a positive way. Your professionalism and safety are

million Americans under some level of winter storm warning, watch, or
advisory today. One spot in Illinois has picked up over 13 inches of
snow!
Snow
began falling overnight in parts of New England and New York, but the
real brunt of the storm isn't expected to hit until later today, when
some of the coldest air in years will spread over the Northeast.
Wherever you’re driving today, we hope you’ll make Safety your #1 priority. Nothing is more important!
