Today, we salute the state of Kansas and a great
Kansan, Amelia Earhart, who was born on this day in 1897. Click through
to read more about her life. In 1932, she was the first woman to fly
alone across the Atlantic. Three years later, she was the first person
to fly solo on a longer flight from Hawaii to California. Then, in 1937,
she set out to fly around the world. After making it more than
two-thirds of the way, she disappeared in the central Pacific, somewhere
near the international dateline.
