Memorial Day was created to honor fallen soldiers of the Civil War. It started in the months after the fighting ended, when people in the North and South were placing flowers on headstones, and quickly became a tradition. Here are some highlights from the Weather Channel regarding the forecast for the Midwest this week:

Showers and thunderstorms will extend from western Lake Superior and the Upper Mississippi River Valley to Nebraska midweek. Severe storms are possible from central Minnesota to parts of Nebraska and northernmost Kansas, and a few thunderstorms will linger in southern Ohio and eastern Kentucky. Heavy rain and severe thunderstorms target the Upper Mississippi Valley and northwest Great Lakes Thursday while some showers linger over the northern half of the Plains.
